Basketball player Wayde Sims' killer found dead in jail
Louisiana State University (LSU) player Wayde Sims was shot dead on September 28, 2018, in Baton Rouge, Florida, near the Southern University campus after midnight.
Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, the 20-year-old forward died when he arrived at the hospital as a result of the gunshot wound.
Police ruled Sims' death a homicide. At 2.01m tall, the player was entering his third season with LSU, averaging 5.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
He was the son of Wayne Sims, who was Shaquille O'Neal and Mike Hansen's teammate at LSU, where he played from 1987 to 1991.
Dyteon Simpson sentenced to life in prison
The perpetrator of Wayde Sims' murder, Dyteon Simpson, was sentenced to life in prison on July 7, 2022. According to East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, Sims has been found dead in his jail cell.
Authorities say that the coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine the final cause of death, but all indications are that the death was caused by fentanyl overdose.
